Xiangqi, often called Chinese chess, has been played for over a thousand years. This set pairs a solid red walnut-trimmed board with hand-finished wooden pieces, so it works as both a serious playing set and a handsome piece for your game room or shelf.
Why Xiangqi Players Choose This Set
Gold inlay lines that last. The board lines are gold wood-line inlay, not printed ink, so they won't fade or rub off after years of play.
Raised, curved walnut border. The multi-slope solid wood frame gives the board a classic look. The wrap-around edge also helps keep pieces from sliding off and chipping.
Pieces that feel right in the hand. Each piece has a rounded, polished face and a comfortable, full grip. Characters are engraved into the wood, so they won't wear away. A concentric ring pattern is laser-etched on each piece, and polishing brings out the natural grain.
Safe, natural finish. There's no paint or lacquer coloring, so the set is non-toxic and suitable for players of all ages, including kids.
The Meaning Behind the Design
In xiangqi tradition, the pieces represent a general, advisors, elephants, horses, chariots, cannons, and soldiers. The central "river" divides the two armies. The gold lines mark the palaces and battle lines where each campaign unfolds. Giving the set as a gift carries the traditional idea of strategy, patience, and wisdom.
Choose Your Wood
Each option includes a 6-fen (approx. 1.0 in) piece set plus the board:
- Golden Sandalwood
- Yellow Wenge (Chicken-Wing Wood)
- Fragrant Rosewood
- Red Rosewood
- Red Sour Branch Wood
- Black Rosewood
- Boxwood
- Black Sour Branch Wood
- Agarwood-tone (Tu Chen Xiang)
Natural wood varies, so grain and color will differ slightly from piece to piece. That's part of what makes each set unique.
