A Chess Set Built for Actual Play, Not Just Display

Most budget chess sets look fine in photos and fall apart after a few games — pieces tip over, the board won't fold flat, and you end up hunting for a missing pawn under the couch. This set solves the problems that matter once you're actually playing.

Magnetic base keeps every move steady. Each piece is fitted with a magnet in the base, so knights, bishops, and pawns stay put on the board — even if you bump the table or play on the go. If you'd rather go traditional, we also offer a non-magnetic version with the same board size and craftsmanship.

Every piece has its own storage slot. Open the board and you'll find a felt-lined interior with individual compartments for all 32 pieces. No pieces rattling around loose, no pawns going missing between games — just close the lid and everything's exactly where you left it.

Solid wood construction, finished by hand. The board and pieces are made from carefully selected wood, hand-finished for a smooth, tactile feel — not the rough, lightweight plastic-feel you get from injection-molded sets. You can feel the difference the moment you pick up a piece.

Felt-bottomed pieces protect your board. Each piece is fitted with a felt pad on the base, which reduces friction and prevents the scratching and scuffing that ruins a board's finish over time — and it also helps the magnetic pieces glide smoothly across the squares.

Locking brass-style clasp for travel. A metal latch secures the folded board shut, so you can toss it in a bag, take it camping, or store it on a shelf without the board popping open and spilling pieces everywhere.

Folds flat, travels light. The board folds in half and doubles as the storage case — no separate box or pouch needed. At under a pound (magnetic version), it's light enough for travel, road trips, or a coffee table at home.

FAQ

Is this set strong enough to hold pieces during travel, or will they slide around?
The magnetic version is specifically built for this — each piece has a magnet in its base that holds it to the board, so it won't slide off during car rides, flights, or if the board gets bumped. If you prefer the classic feel of unweighted wood pieces, the non-magnetic version is also available.

How is this different from a plastic tournament set?
This is a solid wood set, hand-finished for a smoother feel and more weight in the hand than injection-molded plastic. It's designed as a home/travel set with a folding case, not a tournament-regulation board — if you're training for USCF-rated play, you'll eventually want a vinyl roll-up board with a standard 3.75" (9.5cm) square size, but for home games, gifts, and learning, this set holds up well to regular use.

Will the pieces scratch the board over time?
Each piece has a felt pad on the base, which is there specifically to prevent scratching and reduce wear as pieces slide across the squares. It also helps keep the magnetic pieces moving smoothly instead of dragging or sticking.

Is it actually safe for a 3-year-old, or is "36+ months" just a label?
The smallest pieces (pawns) are roughly 1.4–1.7 cm in diameter — small enough that close supervision is recommended for children under 3, which is why we list this as a 36-month+ set. For toddlers who still mouth objects, we'd recommend waiting until they're past that stage regardless of the age label on the box.

What happens if I lose a piece?
Each piece has its own labeled slot in the felt-lined interior, so as long as pieces go back in their spot after each game, they don't go missing. If a piece is lost or damaged, reach out to our support team — we carry replacement piece sets for this board.

Does the board fold flat, or does it stay bulky?
It folds completely flat and locks shut with the metal clasp, at roughly 24 × 12.1 × 4.9 cm folded — about the size of a hardcover book. It's designed to double as its own carrying case, so there's no extra box needed for storage or travel.

Magnetic or non-magnetic — which should I choose?
If you'll be playing in the car, on a plane, outdoors, or anywhere the board might get jostled, go with the magnetic version. If you're setting it up at home on a stable table and prefer the traditional feel (and slightly lower weight in the pieces), the non-magnetic version works just as well and is a bit lighter overall.
