The majority of the "beginner" Go sets sold on the market are from injection-molded melamine stones dressed up to resemble jade or glass. Ours aren't. This is a set of real glass stones (produced under heat, and drop-formed — the same method used for more expensive Go stones, but applied on a smaller scale) for everyday players. The instant you grab one, you'll immediately notice the difference in weight, which is cool and dense vs the lightness and translucency molded plastic can't match, and the feel of the glass.

Player 1s get stones dropped. They stack them upside down. They fit them on the board 100 times before they feel natural in the game. In fact, glass stones are sturdier than melamine stones and will not scratch, dull or get that cheap plastic look after a couple months in use as do melamine stones.

A Board That Feels Like Furniture Rather Than A Toy
It is not printed cardboard or thin vinyl, which may crack the grid lines when it rolls or folds up for storage, but has a PU leather surface, and it can be rolled or folded up for storage without cracking the grid lines, which is great if this is going to be set up and taken down in a classroom, a game club, or just a house where Go is played every so often.

Q: Is this glass or is it plastic that looks like glass?
A: They're indeed glass. The stones are made by melting the glass and drop forming them a form other than the production of the melamine (plastic resin) stones that are sold as "jade-style" Go stones. Unlike real glass, melamine stones will have no translucency or weight to them, and they're injection molded.

Q: How do you know if the stones you are buying are glass or melamine (imitation jade)?
A: three tests: Weight, light, and feel. The glass stones are far more dense than melamine and there is a definite weight differential. When held up against the light, glass is slightly translucent on the edges, and melamine remains opaque throughout. And in terms of texture, glass is smoother and cooler whereas melamine is lighter and has a tannish feel.

Q: This set is designed for the complete novice to Go and is definitely not recommended for a more advanced player.
A: Yes. A complete 19x19 set of 361 stones plus 20 spares – the necessary stones to learn and play standard games. With the leather board, it's also easy to setup and easy to store, so it can be great if you're just starting to learn the rules and don't want to learn how to deal with a big wooden board just yet.

Q: The bamboo jar is hollowed-out and the dragon-scale jar is solid.
A: Both jars contain all of the stones and are of equal size for game play. The bamboo-woven jar offers a natural and simple aesthetic and will be perfect for a more relaxed arrangement, while the dragon-scale jar's patterned finish will add a touch of decoration to the set if you prefer it to be a decorative vessel. It is only a style choice—this does not change anything with regards to functionality.

Q: Can the glass stones break or crack when used normally?
A: The stones are designed for regular handling and can last the normal life: placing, picking up and storing in the stones jar. Care and warnings are the same as for any glass item, do not drop from a high height onto hard surfaces, but will not affect during play.

Q: Is it possible to fold / roll the leather board for storage?
A: Absolutely, the PU leather surface is specially formulated to not crack the printed grid lines when folded or rolled for storage or travel, as would a firm wooden board.
